Howdy Flyfisher People

We are continuing to book for 2010 and even 2011, and wanted to give you an overview of some of the Pescador Solitario options for the coming seasons.

We had a great 2009 season in Argentina with fun and productive explorations at Laguna Larga and great fishing at Estancias Atalaya for dorado, pira pita, and pacu.  For 2010 we are excited about new opportunities at Laguna Larga in the Esquel district of Argentina…this hidden jewel has 14 stream systems and lots of good lakes…lots of good dry fly stuff, plus BIG browns on streamers and such.  You can do this trip as a stand alone adventure, or combine it with the golden dorado destination Estancia Atalaya.  While at Laguna Larga we fished 5 rivers and 3 lakes in six days.

As always, Xcalak, Mexico and Chetumal Bay continues to provide excellent flats fishing, but because of the permit reputation, the best moon phases fill up fairly quickly.  If you want to go at the best times, call us pretty soon.

Costa Rica and Manzanillo continue to provide some very good giant tarpon fishing.  Expect 10 to 15 hook-ups in a week, but expect to land only 4 or 5 of the monsters.  Moon phase, winds, and tides are key in this location, and the best months are September and October.

For the fall of 2009 we won’t be outfitting on the Karluk River in Alaska.  The Koniag tribe has decided not to issue commercial permits to non-indians, so after 6 years we are giving it a rest.  We will keep you steelheaders posted on what might happen for 2010.  We are taking people for a waiting list, should we be able to get permits for 2010.

Because of the damage to the fishery from the volcano about 4 years ago, Painter Creek Lodge, Alaska is limiting its fishing venue to the King Season only, which is basically the first two or three weeks in July.  Last year the clients did well with lots of nice kings in shallow water.  There are still spots open for the July king season in 2009, and most are open for 2010.

We are in the beginning phases of starting a new venue in South Padre, Texas.  Yes you are correct, this is not Pescador Solitario territory.  We are adding this because it is an easy, great way to do some flats fishing for redfish, speckled trout, and ladyfish on an limited budget.  You can also pester a few snook, tarpon, and king mackerel while you are there.

Here is more info on the venues.  As always, go to our web page for more information at www.remoteflyfishing.com.

Mexico – The best times are all of May and June, late October, all of November, and December to the 15th.  We just got back from hosting two weeks…great fishing for permit and bones.  Our hosted trips for October 2009 and May 2010 are already full, but we may add a week and will let you know.  If any of you are interested in a hosted trip the last week of May into early June give us a call or e-mail.  The cost is still $2,180 per week, plus a small transfer fee.

Expect to have good shots a permit, catch lots of bones, and depending on the season you should also have good opportunities for tarpon and snook.  For real snook people, the best time is by far from Christmas through January.  The problem is the weather during that period.  There are lots of northers that can hurt the other fishing.

By 2010 (months of June and July) Chinchorro Banks may finally  come  to fruition as an option for our clients.  This trip will be in combination with Chetumal Bay and be for 2 days and one night.  If six people go (maximum), the cost of the trip is $950 per person, including guides, meals, and the boat ride out and back.  This equates to a $450 added cost to the $2,180 Xcalak/Tierra Maya trip.  Expect schools of bones averaging 5 to 6 pounds, good permit on the windward side, jacks, really big ladyfish, baby tarpon, snook, and world record class barracuda.  There will be a saltwater crocodile under your cabin…for sure.

Costa Rica – Manzanillo and Tarponville remains one of the best spots to get your fill of giant tarpon.  Incidental species include jacks, some to 35 or 40 pounds, Spanish mackerel, an occasional king mackerel, and some false albacore during the right tides.  You will be fishing with 12 weights and intermediate lines.

The key is to go at the very best time period.  This generally involves the months of September and October, and if possible, you should go the week before and of the dark of the moon.  The bonus…the location is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

The cost is $3,190 for 8 nights and six days of fishing, which includes all of your transfers and over-night stay in San Jose.

Argentina – WHAT IF…you could fish some of the most beautiful trout rivers and lakes in the world, and the next week be in your flats wear casting to fish that eat piranhas for a living, or a 25 pound fish that eats mostly fruit and fights light a saltwater fish.  And…the whole while you will be enjoying the finest Argentine cuisine and wines. Well, here you go….we take no more than 6 fishermen per week.

HIGH PARANA PLUS LAGUNA LARGA

For 2010 Pescador Solitario is combining High Parana River (Estancia Atalaya) with Laguna Larga (Patagonia), an incredible Esquel trout fishery with 14 river systems and multiple lakes.

The typical trip would provide 10 total days of fishing and three non-fishing travel days (5 days at Estancias Atalaya and 5 days at Laguna Larga).  See below for more detail on each fishery.

Rate:$5,930 with transfers from the domestic airports to the lodges included.

HIGH PARANA ONLY

For this fishery the clients will be fishing five or six days, or add on this trip to Laguna Larga (Esquel Trout) for more days of fishing. You will be fishing for Dorado up to 25 pounds, but most will be 4 to 10 pounds. Pacu is considered the permit of Argentina, and is the attraction for the best anglers because of its size and power.  The Pira Pita is a smaller fish, to no more than 15 pounds, and acts basically like a trout. It is a hard fighter with good jumps.

The best months for the High Parana (Estancia Atalaya) are January to about the middle of May. The biggest Dorado are around in March and April. The best time for Pira Pita and Pacu, with good numbers of smaller Dorado, is January and February.  We are hosting trips in the month of February and have a few spots still open.

Rate: 5 days fishing $2,750 (double occupancy)

Additional costs include the transfer from Ezeiza airport to the hotel in BA , room at the Loi Suite Recoleta, transfer from the hotel to Aeroparque airport, airplane ticket from BA to Resistencia/Corrientes (round trip), transfer from airport to hotel in Buenos Aires on your return, and the transfer from hotel to Ezeiza Airport.  Expect these costs to be about $650 each (double occupancy).

LAGUNA LARGA ONLY

Six days of fishing at Laguna Larga is $3,180 (double occupancy including transfers from the domestic airport in Esquel).  Not included are the 2 nights at the Lois Suite Recoleta on each end of the trip and round trip airline ticket from Buenos Aires to Esquel.  This cost is about $935 per person.

Due to limited space on some of the domestic flights it is best to reserve as soon as possible, The best time for this fishery is from mid-December through March.  How about New Years Eve at Laguna Larga?

South Padre Island, Texas – OK, some of you might be laughing at us.  You are probably thinking South Padre Island is famous for college spring break and a bazillion t-shirt shops.  What you might not know is that this area has the very best wadeable flats for redfish and speckled trout.  It is far from a solitary experience, until you are standing on a flat 10 miles north of the town, at sunset.

We were looking for a good location and facility to offer shorter, more affordable trips, and this location has it.  Raquel and I love to walk those flats, and Raquel has a peculiar affinity for redfish.  She is practicing “fish whispering” to improve her catch rates.  Casting to late evening tailing reds is nothing but fun, and you can be doing this the same day you fly into Harlingen or McAllen, Texas.

We have clients stay the Redfish Inn, the newest and best located facility on the Laguna Madre.

From there, with very little direction you can successfully fish on your own, or fish via flats boat with Dale Fridy and his other guides.

Expect redfish and seatrout, the largest being in the 30 inch range.  There are plentiful ladyfish and even some snook and tarpon to keep things interesting.  The water is crystal clear and almost all of the bottoms are hard and easy walking.  On the Gulf side you can surf fish for all of the same, and add Jack Crevalle and King Mackerel. For double occupancy guided fishing, expect to pay about $315 per day per person.  Breakfast is included, but you will be responsible for lunch and dinners, as well as your rental car.  Trips as short as two days can be arranged.

We love this trip and think you will too.  The best months, due mostly to wind, are May through November.  We are heading down this July and will give you a report on how things are going.  We will be going back again in September.

Cortland Line Company, Inc. – We are now a dealer for Cortland Lines and associated supplies.  The reason…we really like their tropic lines and climax leaders for our saltwater and Argentina dorado stuff.  What this means to you….if you are a Pescador Solitario client we can offer discounts of at least 25% of retail.  We place orders every month.

Thanks for all the interest and past support.  As always, feel free to call for more details.  We would always rather talk fishing.
Cordially,

Mark Cowan and Raquel Moncada
